Charles and Petronella Humphreys took over Hazel End Farm in Bishop’s Stortford in 1974 and first planted vines in 1990-93. It’s only more recently that they’ve focused more on wine production, and we were lucky enough to discover them a couple of years ago. The added bonus is that they’re only half an hour up the road, meaning the annual harvest has become a fixture for our diaries!
The 2016 vintage has been aged for five years prior to disgorgement (when the wine is finished off) which gives the wine and amazing complexity and richness: lime and green apple sherbet, mouth-filling, savoury, brioche and creaminess on the palate.
Up there with some of the very best we’ve tried and available all Summer long by the glass at Vino Tap.
