Following our Catalan tasting on Wednesday we’re pouring three wines from the fantastic Celler Masroig. Located in the village of El Masroig, in the southwestern part of the Montsant DO, this community based cooperative was established in 1917 to support and maintain the population (500 people) and their agricultural heritage. Celler Masroig have created a cycle of re-investment for the community, producing both olive oil and a variety of wines from their 400 ha of surrounding land.
The Red Pinyeres is made from the older Carignan (80%) and Grenache (20%) vines, then aged for a year in oak barrels. This is a bit of a step-change after the Jove – with intense red fruits and a touch of bitter chocolate on the palate. A lovely alternative to Rioja, with a very different feel and texture.
